Foot samurai with naginata or yari and/or katana - Irr Bd (O) @ 5AP 3-12 per general
Only before 1465 AD:
Mounted samurai mostly with bow and katana - Irr Cv (O) @ 7AP 3-6 in each non-Sohei general’s command

This list covers Japanese armies from the aftermath of the Mongol invasions until the introduction of European firearms. In the 14th century, many samurai fought on foot with swords or the glaive-like naginata. They still fought on the run as individuals rather than in formation, so are classed as Bd (F). Many wore haramaki armour, lighter than the cumbersome oyori of previous times, but increasingly with the addition of arm and thigh armour. Other samurai fought as nobushi foot archer and 75% of casualties were still from arrows. During this period the Japanese mainly fought each other. Japanese bowmen were later out-shot by Koreans. The first ashigaru “light feet” were foot archers, but the Onin War of 1467-1477 brought the introduction of large numbers of fierce but lightly equipped ashigaru, which during the 16th century were to evolve into drilled infantry. Most fought with the 3-4m yari spear, previously used by individuals, but which now became the standard weapon and used collectively. Its use and economic devastation combined to cause a reduction in cavalry. Samurai cavalry had not yet abandoned their bows for yari, and were still closely escorted by foot followers. Generals and mounted samurai can dismount as Bd (O, but only to embark on boats or as defined on p.10 of the DBMM rules. Ikko Ikki were a mass militant religious movement based not on the peasantry, but on merchants and artisans from “temple towns” around Honganji temples. They sometimes allied with samurai-based armies and could include Honganji sectarians who were themselves samurai. They could be fought off by improvised town militia reinforced by local samurai, but such self-defence organisations were considered by the authorities to be almost equally subversive! The Sohei monks were as turbulent as before, but less impetuous. Minima marked * apply only if any troops of that origin are used. Sohei monks or Ikko Ikki cannot be used with town militia. Artillery must be protected by TF.
